Answer
Licensing and Professional Organizations
A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse who is highly skilled and has completed his or her Master’s Degree in Nursing. NPS can work in an organization where there is a need to diagnose and manage common medical conditions. If registered by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), they can also provide prescriptions for certain medications to their patients. NPs may also choose to go into private practice by establishing their own medical facilities. The other available option for these nursing professionals is to specialize in one area, such as pediatrics, women’s health, or family health, thereby acquiring the titles Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, and Family Nurse Practitioner respectively.

Nurse practitioners are qualified to work in urgent care centers, community care centers, hospitals, home health care centers, nursing homes, physicians’ offices, public clinics, nurse practitioner offices, and health departments (Tye & Ross, 2000). They can work in clinics, managed care organizations, as well as office practices. They also deliver care to urban community medical centers, rural health centers, college campuses, and worksite health centers. NPS can also work in health technology companies such as pharmaceutical firms as health care researchers Carryer, Gardner, Dunn & Gardner, 2007). These professionals are also qualified to teach in universities and to offer service in governmental agencies such as health departments and the military.
In the United States, all states have gone through the process of enacting the Nurse Practice Act (NPA). The NPA establishes the Board of Nursing (BON), which is responsible for developing administrative rules and regulations for clarifying existing laws and recommending the enactment of new ones (Kleinpell, 2005). The rules and regulations established by the BON are of utmost benefit in terms of offering support to the role of nurse practitioners in their work within various organizations.
